Abstract: (11 Views)
Background and Purpose: Adolescent athletes may be exposed to psychological, emotional, and competitive pressures that can be associated with increased somatic symptoms and weakened psychological coping resources. Mindfulness, through enhancing awareness of internal experiences, improving emotion regulation, and reducing reactivity to thoughts and emotions, may contribute to promoting mental health and enhancing the ability to cope with athletic challenges. Therefore, the present study aimed to examine the effectiveness of mindfulness-based therapy on somatic symptoms and psychological hardiness in adolescent athletes.
Methods: This study employed a quasi-experimental design with a pretest–posttest control group. The statistical population consisted of adolescent athletes aged 14–18 years in Shiraz in 2025. Forty participants were selected using convenience sampling and randomly assigned to the experimental and control groups (n = 20 per group). The experimental group received eight 60-minute sessions of group-based mindfulness therapy based on the protocol developed by Kabat-Zinn et al. (2010), whereas the control group received no intervention. The Patient Health Questionnaire-15 (PHQ-15) was used to assess somatic symptoms (Kroenke et al., 2002), and the Psychological Hardiness Scale was used to assess psychological hardiness (Kobasa et al., 1982). Data were analyzed using multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) in SPSS-26.
Results: The results of the multivariate analysis of covariance indicated that, after controlling for pretest scores, there were significant differences between the experimental and control groups in somatic symptoms and psychological hardiness. Specifically, the mindfulness-based intervention resulted in a significant reduction in somatic symptoms and a significant increase in psychological hardiness among adolescent athletes.
Conclusion: The findings indicate that mindfulness-based therapy may be an effective psychological intervention for reducing somatic symptoms and strengthening psychological hardiness in adolescent athletes. Increased self-awareness, improved emotion regulation, and reduced emotional reactivity may represent potential mechanisms through which mindfulness contributes to reducing the experience of somatic symptoms and strengthening adolescents' psychological capacity to cope adaptively with athletic and psychological stressors.
