Abstract:   (450 Views)
Background and Purpose: Mental health issues among adolescent girls are a growing concern, and exercise has been suggested as a potential intervention. However, the comparative effectiveness of different types of exercise, such as yoga and jogging, in improving mental health outcomes in this population remains unclear. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of yoga and jogging in improving the mental health of adolescent girls.
Methods: A quasi-experimental study with pretest post test design was conducted among 44 adolescent girls aged 14-18 from Tehran. Participants were randomly assigned to either a yoga intervention group or a jogging intervention group. Mental health outcomes were assessed using the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21; Lovibond and Lovibond, 1995) in the pre-test and post-test. Data analysis was done using analysis of covariance test in SPSS-21.
Findings: Analysis of the data revealed significant improvements in mental health outcomes in both the yoga and jogging intervention groups compared to baseline. However, there were no significant differences in the effectiveness of yoga versus jogging in improving mental health outcomes among adolescent girls.
Conclusion: Both yoga and jogging appear to be effective forms of exercise for improving the mental health of adolescent girls. Based on this, it can be concluded that these sports interventions have the ability to improve the mental health of teenage girls, and therapists can recommend these methods to their clients in addition to their own treatment. These findings highlight the importance of incorporating exercise into mental health interventions for this population, regardless of the specific type of exercise chosen.
