Background and Purpose: Sexual self-esteem and sexual self-efficacy are key components of sexual and psychological health among female athletes, and are influenced by psychological factors such as self-awareness and emotion regulation. Mindfulness training, as a psychological intervention, may effectively enhance these variables. The present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of mindfulness training on sexual self-esteem and sexual self-efficacy in female athletes.
Methods: A quasi-experimental pretest–posttest design with a control group was employed. The statistical population consisted of female athletes aged 18–45 years residing in Shiraz, Iran, in 2024. Forty participants were selected using purposive sampling and randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. The experimental group received eight weekly 60-minute group mindfulness training sessions based on the protocol by Kabat-Zinn et al. (2010), while the control group received no intervention. Participants completed the Sexual Self-Esteem Inventory (
Zeanah & Schwarz, 1997) and the Sexual Self-Efficacy Scale (Vaziri & Lotfi Kashani, 2014) at pretest and posttest. Data were analyzed using multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) in SPSS-26.

Results: The results indicated that mindfulness training significantly increased both sexual self-esteem and sexual self-efficacy in the experimental group compared to the control group (p < 0.05).
Conclusion: Mindfulness, by enhancing self-awareness, non-judgmental acceptance, and emotion regulation, can help female athletes develop more positive beliefs about their sexual abilities and experience more satisfying sexual relationships. Therefore, mindfulness training— as an effective psychological intervention— can play a significant role in promoting the psychological and sexual well-being of female athletes.
