Abstract: (35 Views)
Background and Purpose: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common functional gastrointestinal disorder among students, where psychological factors such as negative emotional schemas may increase the severity of its symptoms. Athletes may be susceptible to these schemas due to training pressures. This study aimed to examine the correlation between negative emotional schemas and the severity of IBS in student athletes.
Methods: In this cross-sectional correlational study, 200 student athletes (100 men and 100 women, aged 18-25 years) from universities in Tehran were selected in 2024. Tools included the Emotional Schema Questionnaire (Leahy, 2002) and the IBS Severity Scoring System (Francis et al., 1997). Data were analyzed using Pearson's correlation test in SPSS-26 software.
Results: The mean score of negative emotional schemas was 42.5 ± 8.2, and the severity of IBS was 187.3 ± 45.6. A positive and significant correlation was observed between overall negative emotional schemas and symptom severity (r=0.42, p<0.01). Specifically, rumination (r=0.38, p<0.01), uncontrollability (r=0.45, p<0.01), guilt (r=0.32, p=0.02), and blame (r=0.35, p=0.01) showed positive correlations with symptom severity. Additionally, results indicated that IBS was more prevalent in students with moderate levels of sports activity than in professional athletes (t=2.28, p<0.01).
Conclusion: Negative emotional schemas have a significant positive correlation with the severity of IBS in student athletes, indicating the role of psychological factors in this population. It is recommended to implement emotion regulation-based interventions for prevention and management of symptoms in student athletes.
