Background and Aim: Body image self-perception is a significant concept in understanding the psychological well-being of adolescent students, particularly girls, in relation to body image concerns and related disorders such as eating disorders and body dissatisfaction. The objective of this study was to norm the Body Image Self-Perception Scale among female students in the first grade of high school in Tehran.
Method: This research employed a descriptive study design with confirmatory factor analysis as the norming method. The study population consisted of female students in the first grade of high school in Tehran during the years 2021–2022. A multistage cluster sampling method was used, and the Body Image Self-Perception Questionnaire (Rohwerder et al., 1999) was completed online by the participants. SmartPLS3 software was utilized for data analysis, employing confirmatory factor analysis.
Findings: The results indicated that the Body Image Self-Perception questionnaire generally consists of seven subscales. The internal consistencies of each subscale, including evaluation of appearance (0.90), investment in ideals (0.78), health and fitness evaluation (0.84), attention to grooming (0.91), height evaluation (0.89), weight evaluation (0.92), negative influence (0.75), and dependency/stability (0.79), were within the desirable range. Furthermore, the test-retest reliability coefficient for a two-week interval was 0.83 for a sample of 50 participants, and the subscales demonstrated reliability ranging from 0.65 to 0.92. Moreover, the convergent validity, discriminant validity, and composite reliability of the scale were all satisfactory. Additionally, the results revealed a significant difference in body image self-perception between female athletes and non-athletes (T = 3.24, p<0.01).
Conclusion: The present study demonstrated that the Body Image Self-Perception Scale is suitable for norming among female high school students in Tehran. This instrument serves as a valuable tool for measuring and better understanding body image in this adolescent group and can be utilized in future research and interventions aimed at enhancing body image and psychological well-being among female students.
