Background and Purpose: Negative emotions such as anxiety often reduce physical and mental health, while positive emotions increase it. The effect of negative emotions on health depends on how well a person can control their moods. The aim of the present study was to compare emotion regulation and psychological resilience between women who practice Tai Chi and those who do not.
Method: The present study is descriptive and causal-comparative. The statistical population of the study includes all women who were engaged in Tai Chi and non-Tai Chi exercises in two clubs in the west of Tehran, in the age range of 40-60 years, with at least one year of training experience, in 2018. 40 women in the Tai Chi group and 40 women in the non-Tai Chi group were selected through convenience sampling.Research data were collected using questionnaires on personal information, emotion regulation (Gross and John, 2003) and psychological resilience (Connor and Davidson, 2003) and analyzed using the analysis of variance method in SPSS-20.
Findings: The results showed that there was a statistically significant difference in the emotion regulation variable between the two groups in terms of the suppression and reappraisal dimensions. So that in the suppression variable, the average score of the Tai Chi group was lower than the other group and in the reappraisal dimension, it was higher. In addition, comparing the psychological resilience scores at a significant level showed that the average score of the Tai Chi group was higher (p<0.05).
Conclusion: Based on the research findings, there is a statistically significant difference between the two groups in emotion regulation and psychological resilience. Therefore, given the significant difference between emotion regulation and psychological resilience between women who do Tai Chi and those who do not, it is suggested that interventional research be conducted on the effectiveness of Tai Chi exercise on psychological variables
