Background and Purpose: Understanding the dynamics between competitive anxiety and coaching styles is crucial in optimizing adolescent soccer players' performance and well-being. This study aimed to explore the association between competitive anxiety levels and coaching styles among adolescent soccer players.
Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 76 adolescent soccer players aged 16-18 from Shemiranat, Tehran, Iran. Participants completed the Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2 (Martens et al., 1990) to measure their competitive anxiety levels and the Coaching Behavior Assessment System questionnarie (Smith et al., 1977) to assess the coaching styles adopted by their coaches.
Results: Statistical analysis revealed a significant correlation between coaching styles and competitive anxiety levels among adolescent soccer players (p < 0.05). Specifically, players who reported higher levels of competitive anxiety tended to perceive their coaches as exhibiting more controlling and less supportive coaching behaviors.
Conclusion: These findings underscore the importance of adopting supportive coaching styles in youth soccer programs to mitigate competitive anxiety levels among adolescent players, ultimately enhancing their performance and well-being.
