Background and Purpose: Understanding the interplay between individual characteristics and mental skills is essential for optimizing athletic performance. Elite gymnasts, given the high demands of their sport, require well-developed mental skills to achieve peak performance. This study aimed to explore the relationship between individual characteristics (such as age, gender, years of training, and competitive experience) and mental skills among Iranian elite gymnasts.
Methods: A cross-sectional study design was employed, involving 30 elite gymnasts from Iranian national team. Participants completed the Ottawa Mental Skills Assessment Tool (Durand-Bush et al., 2001); individual characteristics were collected through a demographic survey. Data were analyzed using correlation and regression analyses to determine the relationships between individual characteristics and mental skills.
Findings: Results indicate that, personal traits of elite gymnasts do not have any correlation with basic mental skills, but a relationship has been observed between personal traits and psychosomatic and also cognitive skills of elite gymnasts.
Conclusion: The findings indicate that individual characteristics such as age, gender, years of training, and competitive experience significantly influence the mental skills of Iranian elite gymnasts. Coaches and sports psychologists should consider these factors when developing training programs to enhance the psychological readiness and performance of elite gymnasts.
