Abstract: (35 Views)
Background and Purpose: Sleep quality is a critical factor in athletic performance, recovery, and psychological well-being, and female athletes are particularly vulnerable to sleep disturbances due to training demands and competitive stress. Non-pharmacological interventions such as relaxation training have been proposed as effective strategies for improving sleep quality and managing stress in athletic populations. This study aimed to examine the impact of relaxation training on sleep quality among female athletes in Shiraz.
Methods: A quasi-experimental study with a pretest–posttest control group design was conducted. Using purposive sampling, 84 participants were selected and randomly assigned to an experimental group (n = 42) and a control group (n = 42). Sleep quality was assessed in both groups at the pretest and posttest stages using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The experimental group participated in eight 90-minute sessions based on Jacobson’s progressive muscle relaxation protocol, while the control group received no intervention.
Results: The findings from univariate and multivariate analyses of covariance indicated that relaxation training had a statistically significant effect on improving sleep quality in female athletes (P < 0.05).
Conclusion: The results suggest that relaxation-based interventions can be effectively used to enhance sleep quality and reduce perceived stress among female athletes.
