Background & Purpose: Physical activity and sports have demonstrated significant positive effects on both physical and mental health in our increasingly mechanized world. This study aimed to predict psychological well-being based on body dysmorphia and body image among adolescent female athletes.
Methods: This applied quantitative study employed a descriptive-correlational predictive design. The study population consisted of all adolescent female athletes in Shiraz during 2023. A purposive sample of 150 participants was selected. Field data were collected using standardized questionnaires measuring study variables. Data analysis was performed using SPSS version 28, with Pearson correlation and multiple regression tests employed to examine research hypotheses.
Findings: Results indicated that body dysmorphia dimensions collectively explained 31% of the variance in psychological well-being scores. Metacognitive control strategies showed significant negative predictive value. Both positive and negative metacognitive beliefs negatively predicted psychological well-being, as did cognitive fusion. Body image anxiety accounted for 15% of psychological well-being variance, demonstrating significant negative prediction.
Conclusion: The findings suggest that body image concerns and dysmorphic perceptions significantly impact psychological well-being in adolescent female athletes. These results highlight the importance of addressing body image issues in sports psychology interventions to enhance mental health outcomes in this population.
