Background and Purpose: Understanding the psychological factors that influence competitive anxiety in adolescent athletes is crucial for their performance. This study aimed to explore the association between cognitive rumination, perfectionism, and competitive anxiety in adolescent athletes.
Method: A correlational descriptive research design was employed in this study. Participants was a sample of adolescent athletes (N = 150) completed swedish form of the responses to positive affect questionnaire (Olofsson et al., 2014), Self-Report Measure of Perfectionism (Parks et al., 2021), and Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2 (CSAI-2, Lundqvist and Hassmén, 2005). Data were analyzed using correlation and regression analysis in SPSS-26.
Findings: The results indicated that there is a negative correlation between positive mental rumination and CSA, and a significant positive correlation between perfectionism and CSA. In addition, both positive rumination and perfectionism variables were significant predictors of CSA in adolescent athletes.
Conclusion: This study highlights the importance of considering cognitive rumination and perfectionism in understanding CSA among adolescent athletes. Interventions aimed at reducing maladaptive perfectionism and enhancing positive rumination may help alleviate CSA in this population.
