Background and Aim: Today, a group of researchers in the field of mental health perceive mental well-being as equivalent to positive psychological functioning and conceptualize it as psychological well-being. This group does not consider the absence of illness sufficient for a sense of well-being; rather, they believe that having a sense of life satisfaction, effective and meaningful interaction with the world, positive energy and mood, meaningful connections and relationships with others, and positive progress are characteristics of a healthy individual. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the effectiveness of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) on the psychological well-being of athletes.
Method: The present study was a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design with a control group. The statistical population of the study consisted of skilled athletes in Tehran with 5 to 10 years of experience. Participants were selected through purposive sampling and randomly assigned into two groups of 15 participants, experimental and control. The data collection instrument was the Psychological Well-Being Scale (Ryff, 1989). Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used to test the hypotheses.
Findings: The results of the study showed that Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) was effective in improving the psychological well-being of athletes.
Conclusion: This study demonstrated that Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) can have a positive effect on the psychological well-being of athletes. These findings indicate that focusing on creating a sense of life satisfaction, effective interaction with the world, positive energy, and meaningful relationships can contribute to personal improvement, rather than solely focusing on the absence of illness. These results suggest that ACT-based therapeutic approaches may be effective in improving the psychological well-being of individuals, especially athletes.
